The story repeats itself, he was a great technician, with great capacity and knowledge, praised by the clients and everyone told him:
-Why don’t you open your own company? And him, always with a thing for business aspiring to have a better life and specially to true self-realisation, threw himself into the market and created his company.
In the beginning when it was just him, things were going well, but with the growth of the business, he had to hire more technicians and administrative people. There he had to be the manager and his management skills were not as good as his technician skills and the business started to get complicated. Clients no longer felt as satisfied and the control of the company’s accounts and employees was flawed, the time to sell didn’t exist anymore, let alone the time to do the technical work he liked. He worked harder every day and each time he had less time to the company, to his family and to himself, life became a nightmare! The company, a headache! The motivation was fading! And the work enjoyment was transformed into an obligation!
This is the story of many and possibly yours too! The technician must be good, but in order to be a good manager, you must program very well the steps you will take and appeal to help to do it and later on organise yourself to become a real entrepreneur. This jump is difficult too, but it gets done! I will give you some guidance on how to do it!
The transition from Technician to Manager
Being a great technician doesn’t imply being a great manager, knowledge and work are essential.
Here go the tips:
- If you’re a good technician and the clients are satisfied with your work, it is that work that must be done by the technicians you will hire. In the end, it is your working ethic that should be passed to others and then become the company’s working ethic! This ethic thing is key, we must translate it in a way so that it can be applied.
- The register of the procedures and of the know-how. Well here it is, the way of passing the ethic and philosophy to practice.
-Register all the procedures in a way that the work is well done.
-List all the tasks you do while technician and start by choosing which you ones you will initially delegate and the ones you will delegate later (the most important ones).
-The least important are good to practice. Write or record (yes the manual can be interactive, it’s even easier), give it to your employee and see, if he has any doubts then it needs to be improved. Correct what needs to be corrected and hand it to your employee to read it. Did he understand it all? Then ask him to do it with your help, correct what is necessary and give him more tasks to complete.
-Monitor and check if what your employee is doing is correct. Did he do it well? Move on to the next task and create the procedure. You are training, you’re passing your working ethic and philosophy and at the same time you’re building a manual of procedures and rules of your company.
-Confirm until all of the procedures are concluded. As you pass the hardest tasks your employees will get trained and will then be capable of doing everything and in the best way.
-Do the same for the next employee. When you think that any employee is capable of training another one, give him that task, but then monitor whoever he trains, because if something is not right, then something missed and must be corrected.
- When it comes to administrative procedures, my advice is don’t waste time with that and ask for help, someone will come, analyse and implement with you, someone who already has the experience required. The same is applied to Marketing and to other areas, as the need for it grows. We don’t want to invent the wheel, we just want it to be implemented quickly!
In this phase, your employees have assimilated the way of working in your company, your working ethic, now it has to be controlled. This is a process I usually call of “Follow up”, actually, I think that nowadays nothing is done without a “Follow up”, it can even be done in an Excel, it is very important.
THE ORGANISATION AT WORK, THE WORKING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW WE WANT TO BE REMEMBERED BY OUR CLIENTS, REQUIRES THAT WE DWELL ON THE TOPIC AND ITS RESPECTIVE SELF-DISCIPLINE.
FEELING THAT THE WORK FLOWS NATURALLY AND THAT WE ARE ABLE TO BE ABSENT AND THE COMPANY CONTINUES ITS COURSE, DOES NOT JUST ALLOWS US TO HAVE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE, BUT TO ALSO BE ALERT TO EVOLUTION, WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD AND HOW WE MUST DRIVE OUR BOAT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BUSINESS.
This is the first phase that must be introduced, so that you can manage your company easily. If you can do this, you will become a great manager and then, as you will grow you will have to take proper precautions and use the tools that will allow you to become a great businessman!
